Diversifying Keyword Reach

Many SEO’s try to target keywords that will bring in a few hundred visitors daily.  They build content focused on the keyword phrase of choice and then they build links to boost it in the SERPs.  This is classic SEO.  I myself like to diversify my keywords.  I know it sound like a stock portfolio, but the truth is, it is a strategy that works.

By building specific niche keyword phrases that are non-competitive and garner only a few visitors daily may not sound like a smart idea, yet it works and it works with very little linking.  If I would offer a few keywords that would bring in about a 100 visitors daily versus about 300 long tail keyword phrases that were guaranteed 2-5 visitors daily, which one would you pick?  For me its a no brainer.  The second option is always better.  I am guaranteed that traffic always becasue no one is fighting me on it.   The way to get there is to focus your writing around particular niches where you can pack (in an intelligent way) keywords from that niche.  After a while as your content grows so will your keywords.  Sure, it isn’t glamorous, but it works.

The SEO Downgrade

With the S&P downgrade and new negative indicators on the economy around one wonders what the future of SEO in a recession is.  Now I know that marketing goes down when the economy gores weak, but I would argue that SEO is still the best bang for your buck.  It is cheaper than ads and gets longer term value through passive, yet targeted visitors.  Look for more money to flow into SEO and that money will come from the ad networks.

Content Indexes Still A Great Way to Provide Authority

With all the ways to create links and build content, a site that has great optimization requires a certain level of authority about a given subject matter. A site can be as wide ranging in subject matter as it wants, but if it does not develop deep interconnected and subject specific back pages, Google and other search engines will not recognize the site as an authority on its given subject.

I for one have found niche oriented subject matters to do exceedingly well on the SERPs. One can take for example a site about constitutional law, throw a blog on the home page and then build a tightly constructed information and terminology index of 300-400 pages in the back end that goes 3-4 layers deep. If this is done, along with some clever interlinking, the site will rank for a variety of short tailed and long tailed keywords.

The most important thing to remember when building a content index is to pay attention to its architecture. Google likes easily accessible information that is highly organized and informative. Just remember to shy away from duplicate content.

No Such Links As “Worthless”

In her recent postJennifer Van Iderstyne tackles some misconceptions about linking.  In it she confirms what I have always believed that there is no such as a “worthless” link.  What do I mean?  Well even a no follow link through blog commenting or social platform as well as multiple weak directory link give the googlebot some info about your site.  By sending these types of links to your site you lay some basic link foundation that will enable more powerful links to be used to push you site.

These links can also give your site a little cover. If you work with clients that don’t want to let the world know they have hired an SEO, then these “worthless” links go a long way in hiding your linking scheme and and network.

So I have to concur with Jennifer…there is no such thing as a “worthless” link.
